Photography in Hornbill Festival

Photographing the spectacular Hornbill festival & rich cultural heritage of North East India

at Kohima, NAGALAND (India) from 1th to 10th December 2019.

OVERVIEW

It was in the year 2000, that the State Government desirous of promoting tourism embarked upon an ambitious project to exploit the cultural assets of Nagaland, through a 10 days long festival to coincide with the celebration of Nagaland Statehood Day on 1st December. Thus, the inception of the Nagaland Hornbill Festival so named in collective reverence to the bird enshrined in the cultural ethos of the Nagas to espouse the spirit of unity in diversity.

Nagaland is a cultural mosaic of diverse multi-ethnicity sprung up by the several tribes that inhabit the State. Each community celebrates its myriad festivals revolving around the agrarian calendar that makes Nagaland by default, a land of festivals. Twelve years on, this intangible heritage asset has been aptly tagged lined in the changed moniker – “NAGALAND HORNBILL FESTIVAL: FESTIVAL OF FESTIVALS” to envcompass through collective celebration the colour and vibrant elements of all the tribal festivities and give a glimpse of Naga life to titillate cultural sensibilities. What has emerged from a local heritage event, metaphored to a national and international festival has now become a must visit and notable attraction in the travel itinerary of both domestic and international travelers.

The annual Hornbill Festival will be held for ten days, 1st – 10th December. It draws all the tribes and sub-tribes of Nagaland to the foothills below the lofty spurs of towering Mount Japfü wherin lies Naga Heritage Village, Kisama – the venue of hte Festival. It plays host to a weeklong medly of cultural performances, indigenous games, craft bazaar, music events, fashion, cycling, motor sporting, events, a kids carnival, floral galleria, food courts, film festival and a series of competitions in various activities.

A prominent sight at Kisama are the imposing tribal Morungs (male dormitories) that are resplendent speciments of Vernacular architecture. Every Naga community is represented in their respective Morungs. Some even accomodate the majestic log drums where male members intermittently beat the gigantic hollowed log with wooden beaters in perfect synchronization. Long before the age of modern communications, the Nagas devised indigenous methodologies of relaying messages by beating different tempos and arrangements to send out messages decipherable only to the village members. As you hear the sound reverberate throughout Kisama it hypnotically draws you in search of the source.

# ADVENTURE TOUR Mention Only in Assam #
(We make all the arrangements for other ADVENTURE TOUR places also)

A Tough terrain had protected Assam from invaders in the past. Today, it has made the state an incomparable outbound destination. Since the late 1960s, diehard adventurers and explorers in Assam have streamlined the activities to produce mountaineers, rockclimbers, trekkers, cavers, hang-gliders and rafters. The state’s tallest peak Hempieupit is perfect for trekking. Guwahati too offers some exciting trekking routes and rock-climbing spots. A network of rivers, rivulets and mountain streams make the region ideal for white water rafting, canoeing, kayaking and other water sports.

Adventure across the Northeast is incomplete without trekking through the deep forests, the thickest in India. Hiking through the famed Kaziranga, Manas and Dibru-Saikhowa national parks can be an unforgettable experience.

Mountaineering: The Simhasana Hill in Karbi Anglong district and the hills of adjoining Dima Hasao district are ideal for mountaineering and rock-climbing. Some 50km east of Guwahati is Elephant Rocks ( Morigaon district) that off ers ample scope for rock-climbing. Guwahati too has rock-climbing destinations such as the 80ft Rohini Bhuyan Memorial Rock field located at Japarigog within the Assam State Zoo, Bhubaneshwari above Kamakhya Temple and Dirgheshwari (North Guwahati).

Trekking: Assam State Zoo has a trekking trail but the most popular among trekkers is the 17km one from Basistha to Garbhanga Reserve Forest via the hills of adjoining Meghalaya. For the more resilient, the trek can stretch 80km to Barapani in Meghalaya via Rani Reserve Forest. Among the most convenient is the trek from Kaziranga National Park to Kukurakata Hills that allows a panoramic view of the park. The trek is within an area of 4.5 sq km.

Horse-riding tours: Private operators such as Purvi Discovery organise casual hack ride through tea gardens or an exhilarating sandy gallop on the banks of river Brahmaputra in eastern Assam districts of Dibrugarh and Tinsukia. One can also go for extended trail rides through forest reserves in the area.

Motorcycling tours: Explore Assam and adjoining states in the Northeast through motorcycling tours that often take riders to pristine rural settings and villages of ethnic communities. A major part of these tours are off -road and through hills and plains.

Parasailing: ATDC Ltd facilitates parasailing at Dalibari in North Guwahati. The sandbars at Guwahati (during the annual Brahmaputra Beach Festival) and near Dibru-Saikhowa National Park in eastern Assam are ideal spots too. Private tour operators organise parasailing at Dibru-Saikhowa.

Boat racing: Speed fests similar to snakeboat racing in Kerala have traditionally been organised during festivals in Guwahati, Hajo, Sualkuchi and Barpeta. For kayaking and canoeing enthusiasts, one can head straight to Charanbeel in Morigaon district, barely an hour’s drive from Guwahati. The Assam Boat Racing and Rowing Association, together with the Department of Tourism, also organises boat racing during the annual spring-time Brahmaputra Beach Festival.

River Rafting: The Brahmaputra and its turbulent tributaries such as Manas and Kopili dare adventurers with their swift current and fiery rapids. But rafting is most organised at Jia Bhoroli, also a Brahmaputra tributary.

Angling: Jia Bhoroli, Kapili and Manas are the best places for angling. The Jia Bhoroli river is home to the fierce game fish, the Golden Mahseer, or tiger of the Himalayan rivers. An annual Angling competition is regularly organised by Assam Bhoreli Anglers’ Association at Nameriat Jia Bhoroli where a number of anglers both from outside the state as well as abroad participate every year in November or December.

Camping: Eco Camp situated at the fringes of the Nameri National Park is an avid camper’s ideal getaway. Apart from birding, trekking and angling, it offers local cuisines. Eco Camp has thatched tented accommodation and equipment for rafting and angling. There are private resorts in the vicinity too, offering tents, cottages and dormitory with basic facilities. Bird-watching is a bonus for anglers and rafting enthusiasts who frequent Nameri.

Similar camps site in Bogamati near Bornodi Wildlife Sanctuary in Baksa Distric (BTR). Apart from birding, trekking and angling, it offers local cuisines. Eco Camp has thatched tented accommodation and equipment for rafting and angling.

Tea & Golf

Assam has been synonymous with tea ever since Briton Robert Bruce claimed to have discovered it in 1823, though the Singpho tribal people living in areas straddling Assam and Arunachal Pradesh cultivated and drank tea as a herbal rejuvenator for ages.
With more than 800 major and 60,000 small estates spread across 300,000 hectares, Assam has the world’s largest concentration of tea plantations and employs 17% of the State’s workforce. Assam tea accounts for 55% of India’s total tea production and 80% of the country’s export.
In 1829, India became the first country outside Great Britain to have a golf course. The country offers many world-class greens today, laid at Himalayan heights, in desert, military cantonments by forests and lakes and in urban areas. But Assam’s ‘tea-tees’ – golf courses in tea estates – are in a class of their own. There are some 20 tea-tees, natural and almost all with nine holes. Within 200 km of each other, these golf courses prepared essentially to enhance the lifestyle of British planters transport one to the grandeur of the Raj days. Today, they are helping the estates package them as exotic holiday destinations where tee-putt is as exhilarating as the teapot.
Cuppa Cheer :
In 1833, a British panel sent George Gordon to China to study plantation techniques and implement them in Assam. Gordon returned with Chinese camellia (tea plant) specimens and workers since the local variety was not commercially viable though more suited to ambient conditions. Crossing the local and Chinese varieties yielded the perfect Indian hybrid, plucked by the ‘tea tribes’ comprising 87 central Indian communities relocated by British planters form central India 150 years ago.
In 1911, the Tocklai Tea Research Centre, the oldest and largest Tea Research Centre in the world was established at Tocklai in Jorhat for developing more scientific and fruitful methods of cultivating tea plants, applying fertilizer, testing soil, selecting sites for garden and processing tea leaves. Brand Assam has invariably been the distinctive black teas (crush tear and curl or CTC). The state also produces a small quantity of distinctive organic orthodox tea that was granted GI status in 2007.
For a better marketing of the tea produced in Assam and the entire North EasternStates, a Tea Auction Centre – Guwahati Tea Auction Centre – was established in 1970 at Guwahati. The bulk of Assam’s teas are sold through the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre. A special logo assigned by Tea Board of India separates Assam Tea from others in the international market. On an average, Assam produces 550 million kg of tea. They cheer and refresh more than 85% Indians every day.
Tea-tee :
A stay in the tea garden, playing golf and driving through tea country is an unforgettable experience. This beautiful state has sprawling lush green tea estates with old-world bungalows, most of which have golf courses attached to them. Besides classical clubhouses for post-golf sessions, some of these estates have airstrips for tourists to arrive and take off in chartered aircraft. Professional golfers swore by the 18-hole Digboi Golf Course that Digboi Refinery lords over in eastern Assam’s Digboi town until the Kaziranga Golf Resort came up in the middle of a tea estate in Jorhat.
Designed by one of India’s leading golf course architect, the resort has a challenging 18-hole, par-71 golf course that is the first of its kind. The club house is the heritage Burra Sahib’s Bungalow. The resort also offers a golf academy with professional coaching and a well-equipped golf pro shop.

Satras of Assam

Majuli, one of the world’s largest inhabited river islands, has several satras – Vaishnavite monasteries, some dating back to the 16th century. The Institution of Satra is a unique feature of Vaishnavism in Assam, founded by Sankardeva, the father of Assamese culture. The satras are not just monasteries, but centres of traditional performing arts.
In 15th century the first Satra was founded in Majuli. Since then sixty five Satras have come up for the propagation of ethics and socio-cultural ideals. However, at present there are only twenty two Satras in Majuli. The others had to be shifted to safer places due to the devastation of flood and erosion.
The satras consist of a large prayer hall facing a simple shrine, surrounded by dormitories and bathing tanks for monks.
The satras also offer guest accommodation where devotees and visitors not only take part in worship of Vishnu and Krishna, but also watch traditional bhaona performances. Young bhakats – celibates – are wonderful artisans and make masks, musical instruments as well as hand-fans and door frames. Some of the satras worth visiting are Auni-ati, Kamalabari, Dakhinpat, Garamur, Samaguri, Bengena-ati and Natun Kamalabari.
The best time to visit Majuli is during the Raas festival in November. Auni-ati, famous for Paalnaam and Apsara dance, has an assortment of ancient Assamese artifacts, utensils, jewellery and handicraft. Dakhinpat is the prime venue for Rasleela while Samaguri is famous for mask-making. At Garamur is preserved medieval weapons such as bartop (cannon). Kamalabari, known for making the best boats, and Bengena-ati are centres of performing arts. Bengena-ati also preserves the royal gold umbrella and gilded robe belonging to Ahom king Swargadeo Gadadhar Singha. The songs and dances initiated by Shri. Sankaradeva , such as Borgeet, Bhatima, Jumora, Chali, Paalnaam, Noyua, Apsara, Satriya Krshna, etc. are taught and promoted here apart from numerous other crafts, of which makmaking is particularly significant.

# Historical TOUR Mention Only in Assam #

Historical Monuments
The 18th century Rangghar, Asia’s first amphitheatre, at Sivasagar town exemplifies the best of Ahom architecture. The octagonal, two-storey structure stands on exotic material—jaggery, black gram, elephant grass, limestone, snail ooze, filtered lime powder, long fish bones, mustard oil, incense, and of course bricks and big stones. Members of the royalty watched buffalo and elephant fights, duels and sporting events from the upper storey while commoners enjoyed them sitting on earthen mounds that once surrounded Rangghar.

The amphitheatre is close to Talatal Ghar or ‘underground palace’, the largest of the Ahom monuments. The irregularly shaped palace had seven storeys, three of them underground with two secret tunnels – one of them 16 km long – for use as escape routes during enemy attacks. The underground chambers have been sealed but visitors can view the remnants of the upper storeys. Another multi-storeyed palace is the Kareng Ghar.
Sivasagar is surrounded by medieval tanks – locally called sagar (sea) for an indigenous technology that helps maintain the water level even during severe dry seasons. Not far away from the town at Charaideo are the maidams or the pyramid-like royal vaults. Each maidam has a domed superstructure covered by a hemispherical earthen mound. No less significant are the following archaeological sites.

Da-Parbatia
The ruins of the door frame of Da-Parbatia Temple a few kms. from Tezpur town, is perhaps the finest and oldest specimen of sculptural or iconoclastic art in Assam. It’s carving has the characteristics of the style of early Gupta School of sculpture. The door-jambs having two goddesses, Ganga and Yamuna, standing below with garlands in their hands in artistic pose and elegance are decorated with beautiful ornamental foliage.

Madan Kamdev
Barely 40 kms. away from the sprawling metropolis Guwahati, on N.H. 52 Madan Kamdev is an enigma, a mystery, a marvel and in the words of Omar Khayam, “a veil past which I could not see”. Very little is known about the origin of this magnificient archaeological ruins. Written history is almost silent on it, leaving wide room for conjectures and hypothesis. The ruins of Madan Kamdev scattered over a hillock dates back to the 9th and 10th centuries. Remnants of 12 temples were discovered here 35 years ago. Apart from Hindu deities, the ruins have erotic sculptures akin to Khajuraho in central India’s Madhya Pradesh state.
Agnigarh
“Preserving the sweet memory of young lovers”, Agnigarh or the rampart, surrounded by fire, is perhaps the most beautiful tourist spots in Tezpur. According to legend, Princess Usha, the only daughter of King Bana, was kept inside the palace which was surrounded by rampart of fire. The present Agnigarh, now only a hillock facing the mighty Brahmaputra, provides the tourist a soul touching panoramic view of both the river and Tezpur town.
Suryapahar
Suryapahar is located 136 km west of Guwahati is a unique archaeological site on a hillock sporting Hindu, Buddhist and Jain relics together. The site has hundreds of ancient engraved Shiva Lingas of various sizes, a series of Buddhist stupas and sculptures associated with Jain religious beliefs. Remains of planned houses and artistic bricks at Suryapahar have confirmed the long-held belief that a civilization thrived here centuries ago.

Deoparbat
Deoparbat is close to Kaziranga National Park, Deoparbat is a hillock housing stone carvings and ruins of temples from the 8th and 9th centuries. The main Shiva temple here was destroyed in a major earthquake in 1897. The archaeological site adjoins the Deopahar Reserve Forest and is close to Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary on National Highway 39. Home to hoolock gibbons and golden langurs, the sanctuary derives its name from a hot spring.

Ambari excavations
Ambari excavations is located in the heart of Guwahati, close to the Dighalipukhuri tank, Ambari straddles two distinct cultural periods ranging from 7-12th AD and 13-17th AD. A ceramic industry dominated by kaolin ware, red ware and buff ware has been unearthed here. Chinese celadon ware and green glazed ware have also been found in the excavation.

Charaideo Moidams (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
The moidams are pyramid like burial mounds of members of the Ahom royalty. The best known are some 40 tombs at Charaideo, 30 km from Sivasagar town, which was the first capital of the Ahoms after Sukapha (1228-1268) established his kingdom there. At Hoolungapara, 16 km from Jorhat, is Lachit Moidam that preserves the remains of Lachit Barphukan (1622-72), the great Ahom general who defeated the Mughal forces in the Battle of Saraighat in 1671. Close to Jorhat are Raja Moidam, the tomb of king Purandar Singha, and Purnananda Buragohain Moidam, the tomb of a general near Tocklai.
